Honors Day for SJC Blue Jays

February 23, 2010

“Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.” (Henry David Thoreau).

Last week Thoreau’s words seemed quite accurate as more than 50 Saint Joseph College athletes were honored for their academic achievements. The students were from every one of our eight varsity teams; their academic success ranged from making the Dean’s List to attaining grade point averages up to 4.0. I was especially impressed to learn that these scholar-athletes are enrolled in some of our most challenging majors, including chemistry, nursing, and psychology. While these students were attaining academic success, they also were devoting hours to learning their sports’ strategies and techniques, practicing with their teams, and traveling to games.

As an NCAA Division III institution, we are delighted to provide students with the opportunity to participate in competitive sports. However, academics are our priority as well as the primary focus for our athletes. It was very affirming to see their families and friends come out to support and cheer our student-athletes’ academic achievements, just as they do for their athletic successes.
